They’ve been too long.

Zeke has gone outside to take up position on the porch. He’s sitting back in the chair, his feet resting on the railings. It occurs to me that with Smith and Axel gone, it’ll be hell of a lot easier to take down Zeke. He’s smaller and lighter than I am, but he is still armed.

I think of the guns. If only they were still in those flimsy cardboard boxes that we’d first found them in, instead of the locked metal case they were moved to. I’d have been able to get one of the guns and shoot that little piss-ant Zeke in the back of the head before he even knew what was happening. But, of course, they already thought of that, which is why they moved the weapons and locked them up. What did Smith do with the key?

Taking a risk, I shake Cade awake.

“Hey, Cade. Can you open your eyes?”

His lids flutter. For a moment, I think he’s going to stay asleep, but then I’m looking into his blue irises.

“Wha—”

His voice is too loud. I clamp my hand over his mouth and put my finger to my lips to indicate he needs to be quiet.

“Do you think you can walk?” I whisper to him.

His face creases. “I don’t know.”

I help him sit, and then we pause, allowing him to get his bearings. He definitely seems stronger.

It’s not often that I’ve wished my son were smaller. I’ve taken pride in producing such a strapping young man. But right now, I’d give anything for him to be more like Laney’s size. I might be able to get him a short distance, but much farther, and I’m going to need Darius’s help. Trouble is, Darius isn’t here, and I’ve no idea when he’s coming back.

Or if he’s coming back at all.

A young woman and a blind man out in the wilderness—anything could happen.

I push the thought away. Fuck that. He’ll be back. They both will.

My cheek is still throbbing from the gunshot wound. It’s a very real reminder of what could go wrong if I screw this up. I imagine Laney and Darius coming back to the cabin, only to find me—and possibly Cade, too—shot dead. It would absolutely destroy them.

Fuck. I need to think about this.

What if there’s still a chance Smith will take Darius up on his offer? I don’t want to accept help from that fucker, especially not after he hurt Laney, but there is still a possibility they’ll take us to safety.

I knot my hands in my hair, unsure what to do.

I think of the boat down at the river. I’d caught sight of it during the water collection Smith made us do. It’s big enough to take the four of us. Could I get Cade down to the river alone?

Before I even attempt to think about taking Zeke out, I need to see if I can move Cade. If I can’t, there’s no point in doing anything more.

I check out of the window again.
